Need a creative way to woo your sweetheart? Here’s an idea for a perfect couple’s date.

Begin your trek at Salt Water Gift Shop to rent a historic peddle car, known as a surrey bike, for the day. Your surrey is a brightly colored, canopy covered, four-wheeled conveyance that takes you exploring the beauty of the city and beaches while watching pelicans and sea birds soar overhead.

Make your way to The Strand where you will find several specialty food shops such as the Old Strand Emporium for all your deli and cold drink needs ideal for a lovely picnic. Steer your way to Saengerfest Park, home to a giant chess board, to taste your delicacies and enjoy people watching. After a relaxing repast cross the street to visit La King’s Confectionary, a throwback confectionary and ice cream parlor. Here you can observe a taffy pulling exhibition and sample quality candies and a malted milkshake at the old-style soda fountain.

As you travel further down the gas-lamped street, notice the Victorian-era architecture restored to its natural beauty. Around the corner, on Harborside, take a tour of towering masts of the 1877 tall ship Elissa moored to the pier, reminiscent of the days when Galveston first became an active seaport to the world. Further down the street, take a moment to view one of Galveston’s 200 historical markers along with the remains of Maison Rouge, home to the notorious pirate Jean Lafitte.

Then, head back to East Beach where you can cycle your way down the Seawall to catch a nice breeze or walk along the sandy shores at sunset. Not ready to end the day just yet? Make a reservation for a romantic dinner with beach views at Porch Café & Bistro. Or, stop by the Longboard Pool Bar for a cocktail and take in the fresh salty air with great views of the Gulf.
